Valentine's Day: are you going to a restaurant?

Found this interesting article from Yahoo! It's titled "15 secrets your waiter will never tell you". Here it is:

What would two dozen servers from across the country tell you if they could get away with it? Well, for starters, when to go out, what not to order, what really happens behind the kitchen’s swinging doors, and what they think of you and your tips. Here, from a group that clears a median $8.01 an hour in wages and tips, a few revelations that aren’t on any menu.

What you should know on Valentine's Day
1. Make reservations early. Restaurants usually don't have an abundance of tables for two. We need to time to plan where to put everyone. You'll get a better table and we'll be prepared.

2. Don't propose. It's so cliché. But if you do, warn us first. We'll put you in the corner. Nothing's worse than a crying woman in the center of the restaurant. Trust me.

3. Since Valentine's Day is on a Monday this year, go out on Friday or Saturday. Most restaurants will also serve their special Valentine's Day menu on those days. Or go out for brunch! Then you can sleep the rest of the day.

What we lie about

4. We’re not allowed to tell our customers we don’t like a dish. So if you ask your server how something is and she says, “It’s one of our most popular dishes,” chances are she doesn’t like it.
—Waitress at a well-known pizza chain

5. If someone orders a frozen drink that’s annoying to make, I’ll say, “Oh, we’re out. Sorry!” when really I just don’t want to make it. But if you order water instead of another drink, suddenly we do have what you originally wanted because I don’t want to lose your drink on the bill.
—Waitress at a casual Mexican restaurant in Manhattan

What you don’t want to know
6. When I was at one bakery restaurant, they used to make this really yummy peach cobbler in a big tray. A lot of times, servers don’t have time to eat. So we all kept a fork in our aprons, and as we cruised through the kitchen, we’d stick our fork in the cobbler and take a bite. We’d use the same fork each time.
—Kathy Kniss

7. If you make a big fuss about sending your soup back because it’s not hot enough, we like to take your spoon and run it under really hot water, so when you put the hot spoon in your mouth, you’re going to get the impression — often the very painful impression — that your soup is indeed hot.
—Chris

8. We put sugar in our kids' meals so kids will like them more. Seriously. We even put extra sugar in the dough for the kids' pizzas.
-Waitress at a well-known pizza chain

What drives us crazy
9. Oh, you needed more water so badly, you had to snap or tap or whistle? I’ll be right back … in ten minutes.
—Charity Ohlund

10. The single greatest way to get your waiter to hate you? Ask for hot tea. For some reason, an industry that’s managed to streamline everything else hasn’t been able to streamline that. You've got to get a pot, boil the water, get the lemons, get the honey, bring a cup and spoon. It’s a lot of work for little reward.
-Christopher Fehlinger, maître d’ at a popular New York City restaurant

What we want you to know
11. Sometimes, if you’ve been especially nice to me, I’ll tell the bartender, “Give me a frozen margarita, and don’t put it in.” That totally gyps the company, but it helps me because you’ll give it back to me in tips, and the management won’t know the difference.
—Waitress at a casual Mexican restaurant in Manhattan

12. If you’re having a disagreement over dinner and all of a sudden other servers come by to refill your water or clear your plates, or you notice a server slowly refilling the salt and pepper shakers at the table next to yours, assume that we’re listening.
—Charity Ohlund

How to be a good customer
13. Use your waiter’s name. When I say, “Hi, my name is JR, and I’ll be taking care of you,” it’s great when you say, “Hi, JR. How are you doing tonight?” Then, the next time you go in, ask for that waiter. He may not remember you, but if you requested him, he’s going to give you really special service.
—JR, waiter at a fine-dining restaurant and author of the blog servernotslave.wordpress.com

14. Trust your waitress. Say something like “Hey, it’s our first time in. We want you to create an experience for us. Here’s our budget.” Your server will go crazy for you.
— Charity Ohlund

What you need to know about tipping
15. If you walk out with the slip you wrote the tip on and leave behind the blank one, the server gets nothing. It happens all the time, especially with people who’ve had a few bottles of wine.

im back from the gym

it has been a little over a week since I last posted. I think it is because I started working out again, which is a great thing for me. I haven't worked out since October, back when I did yoga every single day. working out is such a great release of tension and stress especially when I go right after work or dinner. i do wish the gym was less packed though, people need to use more deodorant!

should i get new gym shoes? the ones i have right now are probably more than 5 years old..but looks like its in decent shape, perhaps a little outdated? anyway i went shopping with PC last week, and we saw these Nikes that I really liked. They are so light, so flexible, so fresh. I will consider purchasing them once i get my refund from ebay and zappos.

looks like they don't have the exact color on the Nike site anymore! i also saw other colors that i really liked, but of course they are out of stock. These are the Nike Free Run+ women's running shoes.
if this color weren't out of stock, i would buy it right now.

also, 5 hour energy is interesting. i almost felt too jittery and had to constantly be moving. feels like they laced the drink with drugs or something. on top of it it wasn't FDA approved? who knows what ingredients they put in there.

Inspirational Findings

Today I feel very inspired about life in general. When in doubt, all you need to do is to talk to a great friend.

I hope you are a bit inspired by these quotes I stumbled upon, because I sure am.

For her :)

Dedicated to someone who I will never never let go, can never be replaced, and who is my future maid of honor.

  1. 1
Be your own best friend first. Learn how to respect yourself. Decide what boundaries are important to you and respect them. Understand what values are important to you, stick by them and seek others who honor those values.
  2. 2
Be loyal. Stick up for your friend when they need it. Respect those times when they need to stick up for themselves. Trust your friend and allow yourself to be vulnerable with them. Also come to understand their limits and say "no" when you need to while still being their friend. A friend of integrity is of great value. It is the fact that through ups, downs, and disagreements you still seek to work things out and be their friend that truly demonstrates your loyalty.
  3. 3
Listen. Nobody likes a best friend who just talks and talks, but never listens. If you're a chatterbox, it's okay if you're also a good listener. Whenever your best friend says something, listen carefully and say something. Don't just say "yeah" and move on. Don't interrupt or fidget continually while they're talking to you. If they ask for advice, listen carefully and give them the best advice you can. It'll earn you respect and of course, make them come to you more.
  4. 4
Be trustworthy. If they tell you a secret, keep it, never ever, ever, tell someone a secret your friend wanted you to keep. Don't even leak it out to someone you know you can trust. A secret is a secret. Don't gossip about your best friend, don't say anything that might turn into a rumor, and don't do things that you know would upset them. For example, if she/he had a crush on a cute guy/girl she/he would be embarrassed if you told someone. Make sure you know your best friend is okay with it. Things like that are sometimes hard to do, but if you want a solid friendship you have to be trustworthy.
  5. 5
Stick up for them. Sitting and watching your best friend get picked on or teased is definitely notgoing to earn you a brownie badge!! in best friends. If your best friend is getting seriously bullied and you're scared you'll get hurt if you get involved, then get help from a teacher or parents. If youcan stick up for them without getting harmed yourself, make sure you do so. Sometimes you can feel totally better after being picked on when a friend tells everyone else to shut up and clear off.
  6. 6
Spend time together. Hang out on the weekends or plan activities together every now and then, do some homework together, and chat during break at school. You don't have to live in each others' pockets, but make sure you spend some quality time together with your best friend to make the friendship grow and become stronger.
  7. 7
Be yourself. Being yourself around someone is part of what makes you guys best friends. Be best friends with someone who you know you can be yourself around, because it isn't worth it trying to be someone you're not so you can be closer to someone. Don't hold things in either, so if you feel uncomfortable or have hard feelings against your best friend, talk about it with them. Make things comfortable between you two, and you'll both go through thick and thin together.
  8. 8
Care for your best friend. If they're away from home, send them cards or care packages to show that you care. If they're sick, call them and ask how they are doing. Best friends care for each other. Show them you appreciate their presence in your life. Write them notes to show that you care and are thankful for them, and ask about their lives. Share your own stories, but make sure you have time for them.
  9. 9
Avoid Expectations. If you assume what best friends' roles are, you will get disappointed and frustrated. Best friends are one of the most valuable friends you have, but they cannot help or support you in every aspect of your life. Do not expect them to always be there, or expect them to say the thing you want to hear. If there are expectations your Best friends need to reach, that will only leave you in a disappointing defeat. Be nice, do not email them saying they are a liar or you won't feel so good.
  10. 10
Share laughs. There is nothing like laughing and smiling to bring people together. Besides, when they're really friends, you guys can laugh at the dumbest and funniest stuff.
  11. 11
Be yourself. You are who you are, and your best friend will accept that. Being "fake" could lead you to losing your best friend.
  12. 12
Trust each other. You may find it hard in life and think that it is impossible to keep your best friend happy. To be a good best friend really doesn't take much. All you have to do really is make sure you can both trust each other with everything and you don't keep secrets. You will go through rough patches but everyone does a some stage in their lives. Just remember though, in order for them to tell you things you do have to tell them things too, even if it's nothing big. Being a best friend means you talk about everything together and you have so much in common. Some best friends do everything together, they have fun and they can be on the phone for hours just talking about their day they have had. You also need to make sure that they know you are always there for them, when ever they need you and that they feel comfortable talking to you about any problems they have. Bear in mind though that sometimes you will have to give the some space so that they can have time alone and think things through. Being a best friend you have to understand them and maybe sometimes or most of the time ask them for advice. You should never keep anything back from them either, even if you think that they will get hurt by it.
  13. 13
Spend some time together. If you feel like you are drifting apart a little then maybe think about doing something together one day, like going shopping or having a sleepover.. you know something fun. Most girls would know that being a best friend means telling gossip that you have heard and you need to fill them in on it. Sometimes you might think it's hard but it will get easier, you just have to know what your doing.
  14. 14
Care for them. If your best friend is ever upset then ask them what's wrong. They might not tell you straight away but they will in the end, you just have to comfort them and let them know that you are there no matter what. If a boy has upset them then tell them not to worry or it will be ok because you are there for them and your not going any where. Also tell then that there are plenty more boys out there somewhere just waiting for them and that they will find one that loves them for who they are. Just trying to be a good best friend shows them how much you really care. Just remember to help them when they need it... lending a helping hand to your best friend really doesn't cost much. In the end of the day, they would soon do it all for you.
  15. 15
Maybe you weren't meant to be best friends. If neither of you make an effort to get together, or if you get into fights with them for no reason, then maybe you weren't meant to be best friends. It's natural to stop having chemistry with a certain person, and if you grow apart, just be happy for the good times, and know how lucky you were to have that great person have a part in your life.
  16. 16
Never leave them. I've done this many times before and I regret it alot. Never say "Yeah, I'll walk home with you!" or "I'll meet up with you tomorrow" and then you don't do it. That makes your friend think do I really trust her? Never do this.
All of the above! I didn't write this, I found this from wikiHow..it was titled "How to be a Great Best Friend". We completed all the 'steps' without even reading this (except for 15, that's not even answering how to be a great best friend)! We shared a big moment today and I am very glad we did. Thank you for all the things in life that you have taught me so far and thank you in advance for the things you will teach me in the future. We both know we can't live with each other and I am putting this on 'paper' for the world to see! B <3 K

On-the-Go Mobile Home

My friend showed me this mobile home and said I would like it. I loved it, it has ample amount of space for people to move around in and would probably not make me feel claustrophobic spending long hours inside. I would say as a traveler, this would be such a cool truck/mobile home to have for road trips (plus you can't even tell what it really is from the outside! it looks badass). Of course, if I ever have a chance to own one of these, I would make it so chic in the interior and even more lived in than it looks.

I'm loving...boat shoes.

Sperry's Angelfish Slip-on Boat Shoes. Love em! One of my best friends told me if I plan on getting boat shoes, I should get it from the actual boat shoe store, which is Sperry. I went on their site and fell in love with their shoes. The only issue now is to find the right color and style for myself!

I really like this gray one, but I don't know for sure.

Brown ones with faux fur inside, reminds me of moccasins.

Sperry Top-sider authentic original boat shoes.

JustBeats Solo Headphones- Purple

Went on the Dr. Dre Beats headphones site and found this gorgeous Solo headphones in...purple! I've always known they had the Solos in white, black, and red, but never knew they had one in purple. Would I really want purple headphones? I don't even know when my purple phase exactly started. My Macbook case is also purple, now adorned with 'cool' stickers i managed to find in skate shops and random stores. These Dr. Dre headphones cost $199.95 though, and I have heard that they are kind of fragile. We shall see.

Sprinkles Cupcakes

This past weekend I went for the first time to Sprinkles Cupcakes. I have heard about their cupcakes from friends who live in Orange County for the longest time but never bothered to go. A friend took us there and we lined up for 5 minutes to get into the chic little store they have in Newport Beach. The downside is that these are considered 'designer' cupcakes and I paid $21 even just for 6 cupcakes. Tried the red velvet cupcake and thought it was not something too crazy that I would drive out to Newport again for. I definitely enjoyed the way they put the cupcakes in their environmental friendly, recycled box. Even their utensils were made out of recycled wood, super cute.

Meet My Water Bobble

One of my coworkers brought this to work today.

waterbobble.jpg

It is call the "Bobble" and is a reusable filtered water bottle. Basically it works like a Brita filter without having to bring the whole jug to work with you. The filter goes right under the bottle feed and only needs to be replaced after 300 fills or roughly 2 months.

This is super cool for me since I drink so much water a day and sometimes if I am on the go and there are no water fountains around I could just rely on this and refill it with water from any tap, even bathroom tap water. Just don't go filling it up with river water, you can still get sick from that because this bobble doesn't filter out living organisms.

Looks like I am going to pay a visit to Target sometime this week to purchase this for only $10 :)

Colors of the Rainbow: Golden Globe Award

This year's Golden Globe Awards we see our favorite stars sporting various colors of the rainbow. I think my favorite color on the red carpet has to be the green gowns. The color looks so eye catching and elegant. If I have a chance to I would probably try green next time I attend a dinner party.

Future home

I have always had a few items that I would love to have in my dream house. This dream house would definitely be by the beach, with a beachfront view and a gate that opens to a path of sand.

parisian-home-bathroom.jpg
I have always wanted a bathtub such as this one, with a chandelier above it. So chic.
norris-living-bedroom.jpg
If I ever update the color palette of my room, I would probably choose yellow, black, and white. Right now my room is in blue, pink, and white.

Wow, leopard print carpet. I love leopard a lot but I don't love it enough to make it my carpet. Pro is that you can hide dirty carpet stains well.

Some hangover

Last night, a Thursday night only, went to a bar call T. Philips and tried their gigantic 32 oz beer mug (I think I had one and a half of those?). Not such a great idea especially because I barely had lunch at 12pm. It was yellow curry with rice from a thai place near my work that tasted very bland and the rice was so dry, that after a few bites I set it away into the fridge. Fast forward to 7pm. I was clutching onto the toilet bowl in the bar's restroom and I wished I had just forced myself to finish that curry. Glad that I have some awesome coworkers and boss to take care of me and eventually drive my drunk ass home.

I know that I will be saying "never shall I drink again"..but in a week, or even maybe tonight, I will be holding some kind of alcholic drink in my hand. Just maybe. Hopefully I will just be holding that drink for a friend. I really don't want another night of blacking out and waking up to mysterious bruises and bumps on myself anymore. we just gotta leave that stuff behind in college right?

year mix 2010- laidback luke

for all you house/electronic lovers..

He's laidback alright.

every time i play this mix i notice different parts to it. it is really amazing how intricate this mix is. i feel so lucky to have met and talked to him!

hello world

I never would have thought to make a blog until I was inspired by a few blogs I stumbled onto during work. this is all really new to me, so pardon my pre-made template and empty spaces here. If you're wondering why I decided to name my little nook "8 cups of water" it is mostly because I love drinking it, bathing in it, washing dishes with it, etc.. all the good stuff we do with agua. And I am sure most of you have heard that to be healthy or even lose weight you need to consume 8 cups of H2O a day. I guess now that you have visited me here you will be reminded how much water you should drink a day to stay fit!

is your glass half full or half empty?
